James Wan unleashes an underwater fantasy of epic proportions with a film that is overlong, overloaded, unabashedly over-the-top, and filled with enough spectacle for five movies. It feels like the filmmakers were worried they may never get another chance at this and threw everything they had into the mix. The design and effects of this oceanic adventure look aimed at making James Cameron jealous and are some of the most marvelous images ever realized in a comic book film.
Jason Momoa brings the appropriate amount of charm and brawn and fits the role and world like a glove. His impressive supporting cast includes Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, and Nicole Kidman who all find room to standout (particularly Kidman). Aquaman is excessive and exhausting at times, but it’s hard not to have a blast when sea dragons, sharks, giant lobsters, and krakens all clash in a Lord of the Rings-style battle royale. I came out of the experience absolutely wanting to see another installment. Grade: B+
